Albertan pastor fined and censored for violating human rights in Canada

For more articles on persecution around the world
visit our persecution blog, click here.

SGA serves Bible-preaching churches in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States by helping native pastors and churches reach their own people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.Canada (MNN) — Canada’s same-sex marriage and hate crimes legislation has had its testing in court.

Adele Konyndyk with Voice of the Martyrs Canada says Pastor Stephen Boissoin and the Concerned Christian Coalition were punished for a letter concerning homosexuality and sin.

The case stems from a 2002 letter Boissoin wrote to the editor of his local Red Deer, Alberta, newspaper that included this statement: “Children as young as five and six years of age are being subjected to psychologically and physiologically damaging pro-homosexual literature and guidance in the public school system, all under the fraudulent guise of equal rights.”

Darren Lund, a professor at the University of Calgary, complained about the letter. The Alberta Human Rights Commission (AHRC) ruled that Boissoin and the CCC violated Alberta’s human rights law by publishing a letter in a local newspaper that was “likely to expose homosexuals to hatred or contempt because of their sexual preference.”

The sentencing phase just wrapped up at the end of May. Konyndyk explains, “The tribunal ruled that Boissoin and the Concerned Christian Coalition had to pay damages equivalent to $7,000 as a result of the tribunal’s decision to side with the complainant.”

The ruling also ordered Boissoin and CCC to cease publishing “disparaging remarks” about homosexuals in the future in newspapers, by email, on the radio, in public speeches, or on the internet. Furthermore, Boissoin was ordered to publicly apologize to Lund in a local newspaper statement.

Boissoin has publicly stated that he “will never offer an apology” and plans to appeal the ruling.

However, the sentence poses a difficult question for Canadian believers. Konyndyk says, “He has a right to have these beliefs and to express them. So when this kind of a case comes where it’s saying he can’t have a moral opposition, based on biblical beliefs, then the question is raised, ‘Where does the censorship stop?’”

The team is urging other believers to keep vigil with them, especially those who live in North America. “Pray for Boissoin as he stands up for his beliefs in this way, that he’ll feel the support and encouragement of fellow Christians in Canada who recognize that his case should concern all Christians as it threatens our very ability to express moral opposition according to our Christian beliefs.” (Click here if you want more details about the case)

Pray that Christians in Canada will be free to voice their position on ethical issues without the threat of legal action. Pray that the federal and provincial governments will pass and enforce legislation protecting religious rights. Pray for these and others facing complaints for raising their voice on ethical issues.

Rev. prays for pastor in Azerbaijan

From: “kissi sampson”
Date: Thu, June 26, 2008 1:16 pm

Hello Brotherin Christ,

I am so grieved to imagine such an ordeal happening to you. But onething i also know is that His mercies are ever sure for us, and his plans for us is of Good to see us to an expected end. For this we should be happy even in times of trouble. If it happened to our master Jesus, then how much more about we his deciples. But what we should be more happy about is that the end seems delightful and we see hope at the end of the tunnel thats our joy, the joy in Christ Jesus which fills us and wipe all our tears and pains. That joy i leave you with that you may never perish but allow it to fill your heart.

May the Goodness and mercies of God be with you now and forever more.

Your Brother in Christ —Rev. Sampson Kissi from Ghana.

Hungry to Pastor Again

From: Ipray4allu@aol.com
Date: Thu, June 26, 2008 12:51 am

MY friend sent ME this request. GOD BLESS YOU ALL. –Wayne

Brother Wayne, I’d like to ask a favor. As my strength has returned, so has my desire to step back into ministry. Paul understood that when he said, “Woe be unto me if I do not preach the Gospel. For a mandate has been placed on me”. Jeremiah described it as “a fire burning in my belly”. Once you’ve been called by God into the ministry, that fire never goes out. It is burning brighter in me than it has in a very long time.

We are praying about finding a church that needs an anointed husband/wife ministry team with strong teaching, healing, signs, wonders and miracles credentials. For a variety of reasons, that church would hopefully also have a parsonage where the pastor and his family could live. Many established churches have such an arrangement, in which they provide a home, pay utilities, TV, internet, phone and the like in lieu of a salary. In fact, it would actually be to our advance if the church didn’t pay us a salary, for reasons too complicated to get into in this E-Pistle.

It would also be to our advantage if that church were closer to the Louisville area than we are right now, here in Cincinnati. Bev feels a strong need to get closer to her daughter Kathy. Kathy suffers from frequent illnesses, and really needs more help around the house. Plus, we miss the granddaughters as well.

With all of that in mind, we are prayerfully putting this request out to all of you, our friends, with two purposes in mind. First, for those of you who do not live in either Louisville, Cincinnati or points in between, we are requesting prayer on our behalf. Second, if you do live in either of those two cities or points in between, we are also asking you to keep your eyes open on our behalf for such an opportunity. We are willing to investigate any and all opportunities. As I told a friend of ours last night, you sometimes have to kick a lot of tires before you find the car you want to drive off the lot. We are in total agreement on this matter (another clear sign that it must be the Lord!) and are asking the Lord to perform this miracle for us before the summer is out. Properly set up, it would provide the badly needed financial relief that we need and also put me back in the game, ready to play.

Thanks for all your prayers and support. I’ll be emailing you about Ruth and Raj with an update in an E-Pistle that will go out later today. Hold on to your faith. God is able. Talk to you again soon.

~Pastor Ray

Presidential Prayer Team Update for June 26, 2008

June 26, 2008

Prayer Requests

Pray for President Bush Thursday, June 26 as he addresses the White House Office of Faith-based and Community Initiatives national conference in Washington, D.C. Over 1,000 public and private sector leaders are there to explore and expand the ways the faith-based and community initiative is transforming government’s approach to address problems ranging from addiction and homelessness to malaria. Scheduled participants include Secretary Chao and Attorney General Mukasey.

Pray for President Bush and his success when he travels early next month for the annual G-8 meeting, a summit of leading industrialized nations. This year’s meeting of leaders from the Group of Eight countries is being held at Lake Toya in northern Japan, and will be Bush’s last as president. The G-8 nations are Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the U.S. For now, President Bush is not going to stop in South Korea as originally planned. Intercede that the nations will accomplish much during this meeting, which includes a “major economies” session, part of a global effort to find a new climate change agreement. The major economies are the 17 largest emitters of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, led by the United States and China.

Continue to pray for presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain. Ask the Lord to intervene in their lives, giving them wisdom and guidance for their campaigns. Ask Him to give them an ear to hear and heed His voice. Intercede for strength and protection as they travel the country and abroad to speak to people and share their views on the issues. Pray for all Americans as we consider who will receive our vote in November, and ask God to reveal His will to us for the outcome of the election.

Pray for our Troops, asking God to give them success, wisdom, strength, help and comfort as they work to defeat tyranny and evil around the world. Pray for peace for the nations of Afghanistan and Iraq, asking God to remove all who would wreak havoc and destruction there. Intercede for the families and friends of our Troops, that God would empower them and make Himself real in their lives as they face each day apart from their loved ones.

Pray for the efforts of senior U.S. and Pakistani military officials who are working to improve communications and collaboration between their organizations, especially with regard to operations along the 450-mile-long Afghanistan-Pakistan border, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. Insurgents travel back and forth along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, and some insurgents are known to maintain camps in the federally administered tribal area in Pakistan’s remote northwestern region. U.S.-Pakistani relations were challenged after Pakistan claimed that 11 of its troops were killed during a U.S. air strike in June aimed at insurgents operating near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

Continue to pray for the state of the U.S. economy. Inflation, sinking home values and soaring gas prices have pushed U.S. consumer confidence to their lowest levels since 1992, raising worries that already weak consumer spending could deteriorate further. Ask the Lord to help all of us as Americans to find more effective and efficient ways to manage our finances, pay our bills and continue to meet the needs of others through our charitable giving in the midst of national economic struggles.

Baptist pastor arrested in Aliabad

Pastor Balaev was only released from prison following heavy international pressure.
Azerbaijan (MNN) — Police arrested Hamid Shabanov, a Baptist pastor from the village of Aliabad in northwestern Azerbaijan, on June 20. He is now in detention at the Zakatala Region police station.

Slavic Gospel Association reports that the police claim to have found an illegal pistol in Shabanov’s home, but his family adamantly deny this claim, saying the police planted the weapon. His brother Badri insists that the arrest is an attack on the Baptist community in Aliabad.

“Their aim is also to bring this as a criminal case and put him in prison. Their target is the church,” he said.

“We’re in shock. This was a provocation by the police, a deliberately-targeted action,” said Pastor Ilya Zenchenko, president of the Azeri Union of Evangelical Christians-Baptists.

Baptist pastor Zaur Balaev lives in the same village as Shabanov. After several months in prison, Balaev was finally released three months ago.

Police have inflicted repeated raids, threats and confiscation of Christian literature on the Baptist churches in Aliabad, of which there are several. Officials have denied birth certificates to children given Christian first names.

“Fellow believers have found a wide door for effective service in Azerbaijan, but the adversaries have arisen to hinder the work of the Gospel. Our brothers and sisters in this largely Muslim country urgently need our prayers,” said Bob Provost, President of SGA.

Police took only twenty minutes to search Shabanov’s home and arrest him, his family told Forum 18. They are convinced that he was only arrested because of his religious activities.

“They threatened him because we meet for worship and pray together. They said we shouldn’t do it. They came in claiming to be looking for drugs and guns. They searched the house and claim to have found a gun, but they planted it themselves. He has got no weapons.”

“He’s a criminal,” police chief Faik Shabanov (no relation) insisted. When Forum 18 asked Shabanov by phone why police had threatened the pastor about holding church services at his home before charging him with having an illegal weapon, Shabanov said, “Who are you to talk to the chief of police like that?” and hung up.

MNN Prayer List For 20 Jun, 2008

High fuel prices affecting ministry abroad

International (MNN) — High fuel prices are affecting everyone, even mission and relief organizations. This is the first of a five-part series on how these rising costs are affecting missions and evangelism. Today, how is it affecting evangelism? Slavic Gospel Association’s Eric Mock says they’re feeling it in areas like Belarus. “Considering their salaries are a fraction of what we’re provided here, the fuel costs are almost insurmountable. So when we as a partner organization are not able to assist them, it shuts down their ability to move forward.” Living Water International uses diesel to power their drills, says LWI’s Bruce Whitmire. “It has caused us to delay drilling projects. Every time Living Water International installs a well, we share the Good News of Christ, because that’s why we do what we do.” So evangelism is curtailed. Bible Pathway’s Al Joslyn says their devotional distribution is affected. “Postage rates have been continually going up. The cost of transport for everyone is having to be passed down.” Tomorrow we’ll focus on how high fuel costs affect relief ministries.

* Pray that either fuel prices will fall or more people will help provide for ministry needs.

Myanmar junta evicts cyclone survivors

Myanmar (MNN) — Myanmar’s junta government has been quietly evicting cyclone survivors from shelters and shutting down refugee camps. They’re sending the people home for “reconstruction,” but there’s nothing left in most villages. Vision Beyond Borders’ Patrick Klein says in order to get aid to these areas, “There’s a list. For that village, you have to be on that list. You have to be approved by the village leaders. If it’s not (on the list), you’re turned back, and any supplies you’ve brought for the cyclone victims will be confiscated by the government. I don’t know how our friends are getting on those lists, but they are going in with a team.” Klein says their aid team arrives in Myanmar tomorrow. Aside from the physical help, they’ll also be sharing their faith. “I’ve never seen the people cling to every word. They were desperate for hope. That’s what we want to do is bring them not just the supplies. That’s the secondary thing. But we are trying to get the Gospel to these people because we know that there’s a lot of people that could die as a result of this catastrophe, but we want to give them the hope that is in Jesus Christ.”

* Pray that hearts will respond to the hope of Christ.

* Pray for the safety of the believers as they distribute the aid.

* Pray that the supplies will get through to the people who need them.

Iranian government cracks down on believers

Iran (MNN) — Iranian police have launched a more extensive crackdown on “social corruption” throughout the Islamic Republic. Voice of the Martyrs’ Todd Nettleton says a religion law is causing them concern. “It makes the death penalty mandatory for people convicted of leaving Islam to follow another faith. That, obviously, is another piece of intimidation.” Authorities are rounding up church leaders. 44-year-old Mohsen Namvar was among those arrested. “There has been, over the last 60 days, about a dozen Christians arrested. Most of them have been interrogated and held for a little while, and then released after paying a heavy bail. As far as we know, at this time, Mr. Namvar is still being held.” Why the focus on believers? Nettleton says, “The church is growing at an absolutely phenomenal rate in Iran. Muslims are coming to know Christ; they’re getting involved with these house church groups. That is what has caused the concern of the government. That’s why these arrests are happening.”

* Pray for strength for those who come to Christ, despite the threats and dangers.

* Pray for those who are forced to flee their country, that they may find refuge and help.

* Pray that the government will be open to change and allow full rights and protection for non-Muslims.

High fuel prices impact relief efforts abroad

International (MNN) — High fuel costs are causing food prices to skyrocket. That’s having a negative impact on relief agencies providing food and the Gospel. In part two of our series on the global fuel crisis, Food for the Hungry’s Gary Zander says last year 10 percent of the people in more than 50 countries didn’t have the nutrition they needed. He expects that go up to 50-percent levels. “In countries where it’s already over 50 percent, then we’re reaching into famine type of situations. Unless we see some kind of response quickly, we may be seeing several countries going into famine modes throughout the summer.”
Living Water International has had to cut back on water drilling projects because of high diesel prices. Mike Douris with
Orphan Outreach says the crisis hurts at home and abroad. “As the economies around the world get impacted by oil prices, the need for relief aid and the stress on families means more need. And then, you have charities that can be impacted by the amount of money that’s being donated, so you end up having more need and less ability to meet that need.” In part three tomorrow, we’ll look at how rising fuel prices affects missionaries directly.

* Pray that donations will increase to help with relief needs.

* Ask God to use the relief efforts to lead people to Himself.

* Pray that ministries will be wise in how they spend their ministry dollars.

Mynamar pushes pace for post-cyclone reconstruction

Myanmar (MNN) — Myanmar is relentless about moving ahead with post-cyclone reconstruction. They’re closing down the refugee camps and asking foreign teams to leave. But Global Aid Network isn’t among them. GAiN’s Duane Zook was assessing their projects in six villages. “The government has asked us, along with our church partners, to build a school in each one of those. Over the next two to three months, we hope to have those six schools completed. Secondly, we’ve been asked to help reconstruct community centers. After that, we hope to be able to repair the homes of the people who just can’t do it.” Zook was encouraged by the resilience of the church. “Yes, I saw tears, but I saw people who were getting ready to get back on their feet. A lot of the believers said, ‘You know, we don’t like what happened, but we believe God has allowed this to happen for a reason. This is giving us a special opportunity to share God’s love.’” The team needs both prayer and funding. Go to our website if you can help.

* Pray that the church will get the aid needed to help effectively physically and spiritually.

* Pray that the seeds of the Gospel will continue to be planted in Myanmar.
