Court sentences missionary kidnappers in the Philippines
Philippines (MNN) — There has been some resolution to the 2001 hostage
situation that resulted in the death of a missionary with New Tribes
Mission, Martin Burnham. On Thursday Dec. 6 a court in Manila sentenced
14 members of an Islamic militant group Abu Sayyaf to life in prison.
Gracia Burnham was held hostage for more than a year with her husband
before he died in the rescue that freed her, and she says the sentence is
fair. “I would just like more than anything for these guys to hear the
Gospel of Jesus while they’re in jail. I’m glad they weren’t sentenced
to death. I would love for them to hear about the forgiveness of
Jesus.” Burnham thinks perhaps someday she’ll be able to share that message.
“I would love to go back and be able to visit with them and just talk
with them through an interpreter, and most of all get some literature
in their language that talks about salvation.” Pray for the Burnham
family during this difficult time of the year.
* Pray for the witness of Gracia Burnham to be used to illustrate
the power of forgiveness.
* Pray for the salvation of the Islamic militants while in jail.

Two YWAM staff gunned down in USA
USA (MNN) — Youth With a Mission continues to be in shock after two of
their young staff members were killed and two others wounded. YWAM’s
Paul Filidis says a man described in his early 20’s came to the YWAM
training center dormitory shortly after midnight Sunday morning asking to
stay there. That’s when 26-year-old Tiffany Johnson was called. “She
explained to him apparently that this was not an option — this was not a
place where he could stay. And in response to that, he pulled out a
gun and started shooting, killing her and one other person”–24-year old
Philip Crouse. YWAM sends Christians around the world — some to places
where persecution of Christians is common. Filidis is concerned that
“people not shy away from getting involved as God is calling people to
get involved in ministry and missions. Pray that this would not detract
them from what God may be asking them to get involved with. We hope
that maybe more people will be interested in ministry rather than shying
away from it.”
* Pray for recovery for those who are injured.
* Pray for comfort for the families of those who were killed.

A ministry grieves with believers in Colorado, considers impact
USA (MNN) — Authorities investigating Colorado’s shootings at YWAM say
the gunman held a grudge against Christians. Ironically, Matthew
Murray had been training at the missionary training school to go on a
mission trip, but was not accepted. While some called the four who died in
Sunday’s shootings “martyrs,” Carl Moeller of Open Doors USA clarified
that a bit more: “I would say that those brothers and sisters who lost
their lives this past weekend were killed in persecution against
Christians–a vendetta by this man against Christians.” Open Doors supports the
global persecuted church. Moeller says this incident shows that the
American church should be prepared for the rigors of evangelism. “As
Christians in America, the more we stand up for righteousness in our
society, the more we stand up for God’s Word in public places, and the more
we make Christianity the issue of life…we’ll draw more and more fire.
It’s inevitable.”
* Pray for healing in the two communities affected by the
shootings.
* Pray for those who are persecuted for their faith around the
world.

Bombings in Iraq keep Christians in fear
Turkey (MNN) — At least 27 people died and 100 were wounded Wednesday
when three car bombs ripped through a southern Iraqi city. Rival Shiite
groups have been battling for control of oil and power. The violence
has forced thousands of Christians out of Iraq. Some say 90-percent of
the Christian population is gone. Many are refugees in Turkey. World
Evangelical Alliances’ Johan Candelin says they’re now his mission. “The
challenge is huge, but it’s better to do a little than to do nothing. So
that’s why I’m going there to comfort them, to share the Gospel about
the birth of Jesus Christ and bring some food and toys for the
children.” Candelin says he’s helping a small group of 2,000 who have had loved
ones killed or kidnapped. “Many have had children who have been taken
away. Once they got them back, they left the country. So unfortunately,
the Christian population in Iraq is leaving the country very fast. It
is becoming a totally Muslim country, unfortunately.”
* Pray that the Gospel will continue to bear fruit in Iraq and that
the Church will grow.
* Pray for believers in Iraq to be strong in their faith.

Open Doors reaches out to Iraqi refugees
Iraq (MNN) — The United Nations estimates that roughly 2,000
Christians per day are being displaced by violence in Iraq. Open Doors is
working closely with local partners to bring in survival supplies for those
who have fled to the North. In doing so, they’re helping preserve a
remnant church and Christian identity. Carl Moeller of Open Doors says, “To
be completely dislocated is so horrible for them. They’ve lost their
jobs, they’ve lost their homes, and they’ve even lost their church. So
we’re actually working to bring Christian communities together in small
groups–local churches of refugees where people can find others that
have fled as well.” However, seeking refuge in the North hasn’t turned
out very well, either. “The influx has created a social dynamic that has
created more violence against Christians, so we don’t have a lot of
optimism in the short term for the situation over there. We’re just
praying that God would intervene in these violent areas so the violence would
decrease, and that not only physical relief would be provided for
these, but a spiritual relief.”
* Pray that Open Doors co-workers can continue to provide relief
supplies to the most needy.
* Pray for spiritual healing.
* Pray that the violence will decrease and the refugees can return
home.
