Federal government strips “God” from the Washington Monument

contact@afa.net

National monument no longer references God

Take Action

Dear ,

The National Park Service, a branch of the federal government, has joined the Veterans Administration in establishing anti-Christian bigotry as public policy. The NPS has censored “God” from a key display of America’s Christian heritage in Washington.

The reference is an engraving of “Laus Deo,” which is Latin for “Praise be to God,” on the east side of the 100-ounce aluminum cap atop of the Washington Monument.

Since the actual inscription on the cap is unviewable atop the 555-foot stone column, the NPS created a replica which is on display in the white-colored obelisk of marble, granite and sandstone.

Now “God” has been removed from the plaque containing information about the Washington Monument. In 2000 the plaque read:

APEX OF THE MONUMENT Reproduction The builders searched for an appropriate metal for the apex that would not tarnish and would act as a lightning rod. They chose one of the rarest metals of the time, aluminum. The casting was inscribed with the phrase, Laus Deo, (Praise be to God).

The NPS censored the last sentence from the latest plaque, which now reads:

CAP OF THE MONUMENT Reproduction The builders searched for appropriate metal for the cap that would not tarnish and would act as a lightning rod. They chose one of the rarest metals of the time – aluminum.

In addition, the replica of the cap which is in the monument has been positioned so close to the wall that the wording “Laus Deo” cannot be read. Prior to the censorship by the NPS, the replica wording could be read.

It was the third time in just the past few weeks that an agency of the federal government has banned the
use of “God.” First was the Architect of the Capitol banning religious references when issuing flag
certificates. That ruling was later rescinded. Next came the
Veterans Administration censoring religious references in the script used to describe each fold of the flag at 125 national cemeteries. That censoring came after only one person complained.

Because of the NPS censorship, children and other visitors to the monument now have no way to know that the words, ‘Laus Deo,’ (‘Praise be to God’), are inscribed on the original cap atop the monument! This censoring of God will help establish anti-Christian bigotry into federal law.

Send Message to President Bush Today: U.S. Should Give Peace in Uganda a Real Chance

    alison@resolveuganda.org

Tomorrow might be the United States’ best chance ever to help advance lasting peace in northern Uganda.

And by taking thirty seconds right now to send an e-mail to President Bush, you can be a part of this
    historic opportunity.

For the first time, President Bush will host a meeting with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to specifically discuss the crisis in northern Uganda. He will have the opportunity to convey the U.S.’ full support for the ongoing negotiations aimed at ending Uganda’s 21-year war.

But there is a chance that this meeting will instead be used to consider joint military operations against the rebel forces, a development which would provoke a resumption of violence and undermine the progress made by the negotiations.

Since the peace talks began, a degree of security has returned to northern Uganda and hundreds of thousands of people have started to leave displacement camps to return home. Rebel attacks have dropped sharply in the region and children are no longer commuting at night to stay safe. Peace is closer now than ever before for the people of northern Uganda, and now is not the time to be discussing military options.

By sending this message to President Bush today, you can help make sure he delivers that message tomorrow.

Too many times in Uganda’s history, the prospect for peace has been destroyed by ill-conceived military action. The ongoing negotiations provide real hope to the millions of people affected by this conflict that this legacy of violence may be overcome and that a lasting peace may finally be on the horizon.

Your action can help make sure that this hope is not met with disappointment.
Peace is within reach for the people of northern Uganda.

Will you send an e-mail to President Bush to make sure this opportunity doesn’t slip through our fingers yet again?

    Sincerely,

    Alison Jones

    Director of Advocacy, Resolve Uganda

P.S. Thanks to all of you who made calls to your members of Congress on this important issue.

Sending an email today is a great way to increase the impact of your efforts!

Subject: Prayer request for immediate job

    From: “Shelly” shelly407@comporium.net

    Dear Prayer Warriors & Intercessors,

Please pray for a job for my husband who is out of work because the contract was terminated where he was working. He applied for another job that was enough pay, and they told him he was hired but that the board had to make the final decision. It has now been almost 4 weeks, and they still have not called him and no other jobs have opened up. We are now living off what little savings we have. Please pray that the board will make a favorable decision quickly or that another good job would open up that is a secure job that’s full time with good pay and good benefits and not like the one he had that wasn’t stable.

Thank you so much for your prayers.

Urgent Prayer Rrequest for Sheri and her Mom

    HeDide4Us@aol.com

Shirley (Sheri’s mom) is back in the hospital. She is the lady who has had stroke-like symptoms after having finished treatment for cancer. She has an infection (I don’t think they know what is causing it). They have called in a hematologist to study her blood, so I guess the infection has something to do with that. Please be in prayer for Shirley. She was slowly improving until this relapse.

Also, continue to pray for Sheri who is post elbow surgery.

    Thanks!

    ePrayer Message for 10/25/2007

    wa_prayer@wycliffe.org

Wycliffe Associates ePrayer October 25, 2007 “. . . There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ
    Jesus.”
    –Romans 8:1 (NIV)

    < < <

Banquet Area Director team, Ralph and Mary Wheeler, are holding banquets in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, with speakers Boone and Julie Aldridge. The Aldridges first spent time in Benin, Africa, doing language survey work, then transferred to Kenya. Boone serves in research, working with the African Church, and Julie serves in hospitality. The Aldridges heard the call to missions at a Wycliffe Associates banquet. Pray for health and safety in travel, and as they share their vision for Bible translation, ask God for skill in communication and for responsive hearts.

The wildfires in California have been devastating. Pray that God will use His people during this time to give help and comfort to those who have lost their homes or businesses to the fires. Pray for the firefighters and those manning the evacuation sites.

Mike and Marilyn Williams (banquet southwest area director team) are on the road holding banquets and are away from their home in the Oceanside area-one of the neighborhoods being evacuated. Their grown children, and other family members are also in that area. Pray for the safety of their home and family.

Pray for Delight Kent, volunteer in the accounting department in Orange, CA. She has been having tests to determine the cause of the fever, discomfort, and weakness she’s been experiencing for about a month. Pray that God will give the doctors wisdom in their search to determine the problem and find the right treatment for Delight.

Dallas Construction Superintendent Dave Delmedico expects to start the foundation for the dining room addition early in November. This phase of the job has been contracted, but there is still plenty of work that can be done this winter by volunteers.

Pray for Larry Luther, who is in a hospital in Germany with intense pain in his lower back and right leg from a deteriorating lower lumbar. Pray that the machine pumping the pain medicine through a very narrow tube will work properly to distribute the medicine evenly. Pray that Larry will understand what the nurses and doctors say to him, and that he will have the right German words to respond. His wife Eunice asks prayer that the trains will not be on strike, so that she can visit Larry in the hospital.

Praise that a second surgery to repair Ann Van Enns’ eyelid was successful (10/4) Ann writes: “Thank you for your prayers . . . Please tell your Wycliffe friends how deeply grateful I am.”

    Good news and Prayer Need

    muthukavitha2000@yahoo.com

I really want to thank you for your continued prayers for us. I have a good news and prayer request.

I come from a remote village in South India . I just completed 10th grade and could not continue my studies due to my family’s economic situation. Then the Lord opened doors for me to complete Bachelor of Theology (B.Th) and Master of Divinity (M.Div) with full scholarship in two different Seminaries! For the last 10 years I am with Youth With A Mission.

One of my dreams is to get a Doctorate from a reputed University. I have been praying for this for some years now. Recently I got accepted for Doctor of Ministry! (D.Min) in Transformational Leadership for the Global City, from Bakke Gradutate University of Ministry (BGU), Seattle , USA . BGU is a reputed university for Urban Missions. Please check their web-www.bgu.edu. The D.Min program is for 3 years. Another feature of this course is-this is very practical. They are academic but want to see the transformation of Cities with the Gospel!

I decided to do this course so that I can be catalyst in my Chennai City . Chennai has 8 million populations with 2000 slums and 150,000 street children. The need in this City is great only Gospel can change everything. I want to learn as much as possible from BGU and apply it in my City, so that people will come to know the Lord and transform their neighborhood.

BGU has given me full scholarship which will cover my tuition and books! I can be in India and do this course. I need to study so much and ready so many books. I also need to write a dissertation. One of the requirements is to attend a 2 week course called “Overtrue I” in Jan 14-25, 2008 in Seattle , USA . I have few challenges-I need to take care of my travel expenses, food and lodging for 2 weeks. Also getting Visa to USA is another challenge. Will you please stand with me and pray for these needs? Also if you like to contribute towards visa fee, air ticket and other expenses, please let me know.

Thank you so much for taking time to read this and pray.

    Love to hear from you.
