A day of mourning in the Middle East may
open doors for outreach Middle East (MNN)
– Tisha B’Av is the ninth day of the month of Av on the Jewish calendar. It’s observed as a day of
mourning, and this year it fell on July 24. E3 Partners’ Tom Doyle says there’s good reason for it. Over
the course of history, Israel has suffered tragedy and catastrophe on Tisha b’Av. “The first Temple was
leveled on the ninth of Av. The second Temple was leveled on the ninth of Av. The Spanish Inquisition started
on the ninth of Av. The ‘Final Solution’ was presented to Hitler on the ninth of Av. So, as we head toward
that date, there seems to be every year this collective sigh of ‘OK, what’s gonna happen this year?’ “
While it’s difficult work, Doyle says they’re still resourcing a remnant church in the Middle East.
“With all of the pressure–Israel in a vice grip right now and Syria openly saying they’re going to
attack–Israelis are just bracing themselves for another tragedy, something coming their way. But
on the other hand, that gives believers a chance to openly share their faith and talk about the hope
in Yeshua as Savior.”
* Pray that hearts will be open to the hope of Christ.
* Pray for peace in the region.

23 Korean Christians kidnapped by Taliban in Afghanistan
Afghanistan (MNN) — The Taliban has reportedly extended its deadline in a life or death ransom for 23 South Korean hostages seized last week in Afghanistan. Voice of the Martyrs’ Canada’s Glenn Penner says the militants threatened to execute the South Korean hostages if the government didn’t free imprisoned insurgents. “It’s not safe for NGOs period, and certainly not for Christian ones, particularly. But I’m quite certain that they were not specifically targeted because they were Christians. I am concerned, however, that the way that they are treated may differ when it is discovered that they are specifically, Christian missionaries.” Penner says this time is crucial in the negotiations for the hostage lives. They’re urging prayer. “Pray for wisdom for the South Korean government as they are negotiating with the Taliban at this time. Pray for the safety of these missionaries. Their organization has made it very clear that they were not involved in evangelistic work. Having said all that, pray that they will be faithful witnesses to Christ, in love and action.”
* Pray for the safety of these missionaries.
* Pray that they will be faithful witnesses to Christ, in love and action.
* Pray God would strengthen their faith through this struggle.

Turkish elections still a question mark for Christians
Turkey (MNN) — Pressing challenges face Turkey’s ruling AK party after its win in parliamentary elections. Christians will still be at risk, says Johan Candalin with the World Evangelical Alliance’s Religious Liberty Commission. “It’s probably the best party in power for the Christian minority because the other option would be the nationalistic party, and they are much more anti-religious and pro-nationalistic than the ruling party. So we’re not choosing between good and bad, but between bad and even worse here.” Constitutionally, religious freedom is guaranteed, but not socially. Candalin doesn’t believe there will be any changes for Christians until Turkish leaders begin acknowledging Christians are Turkish citizens, too. “As long as you have this disinformation, or propaganda, that all the Christians are paid from abroad and they’re there to split the Turkish nation — as long you have that in the media and no one really challenging this, you will surely have fanatics who will commit aggressive actions.”
* Pray for the safety of believers.
* Pray that Christians will share their faith despite the danger.

Good news from Haiti: more stability
Haiti (MNN) — Political upheaval, kidnapping, lack of food, and high unemployment have plagued Haiti for years. However, things appear to be changing says Killick Aristede, Technical Director for Radio Lumiere, an outreach of World Gospel Mission. He says police now have the upper hand in gang violence, and the government’s more stable. “They have been in power for over a year. The president is not a born again believer himself, but he believes in the power of prayer. He actually invites evangelicals to come to the national palace once a month to pray for Haiti, and we have seen big changes happening.” With renewed stability, they need work teams to help their ministry because Aristede says Haitians are ready for the Gospel. “In the midst of calamity, in the midst of misery, the Lord has this way of getting the attention. I think He’s getting the attention of the Haitian people right now, and people are turning to God because they are so desperate.” $200,000 is needed to help their radio ministry.
* $200,000 is needed for a new radio facility.
* Pray that more short-term groups will go and help the country.
* Pray for continued stability in Haiti.

Children are disappearing in India, Christians want to prevent it
India (MNN) — In India where the female child population is dropping. weeping accompanies the births of baby girls because of the dowry that must be paid to marry them off. Infanticide and abortion is rampant. Girls that survive are often sold into slavery. Gospel for Asia’s KP Yohannan says their Bridge of Hope program is rescuing some. “We take these children from the streets, from homes, and give them education, take care of their food and clothing, and teach them about the Lord Jesus Christ. We now have 49,000 children in our [more than] 400 centers.” Many of the children come to Christ through the program and have an incredible impact. Yohannan tells about one girl. “There is a nine-year-old girl that gave her life to Christ at one of our schools. She became responsible for 14 other adults that belonged to her family coming to the Lord Jesus Christ because of her enthusiasm — quoting Bible verses and talking about Jesus.” $28 a month can rescue a child physically and spiritually.
* 28-dollars a month can support a child.
* More families are needed for the Bridge of Hope program.
